Job Overview
The Automation Systems Engineer will design, implement, and maintain advanced control systems that optimize production efficiency, ensure product quality, and reduce operational costs. Working closely with cross‑functional teams—including production, maintenance, and IT—the engineer will lead projects that integrate programmable logic controllers (PLCs), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, and industrial IoT solutions. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and program PLC logic for bottling, packaging, and material handling equipment.
- Design SCADA interfaces and dashboards to provide real‑time visibility into production metrics.
- Integrate industrial IoT sensors for predictive maintenance and energy optimization.
- Collaborate with process engineers to translate production requirements into automated solutions.
- Conduct system testing, validation, and commissioning to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for automation equipment across three shifts.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation, including wiring diagrams, functional specifications, and change logs.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives using Six Sigma and lean manufacturing principles.
- Ensure all automation projects adhere to local regulations and international standards such as IEC 61131‑3.
- Mentor junior engineers and technicians on best practices in automation engineering.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in PLC programming languages (ladder logic, structured text, function block).
- Experience with SCADA platforms such as Wonderware, Ignition, or Siemens WinCC.
- Strong knowledge of industrial networking protocols (Ethernet/IP, Profibus, Modbus).
- Familiarity with HMI design and user experience considerations.
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics and mechanical drawings.
- Problem‑solving mindset with a data‑driven approach to root‑cause analysis.
- Excellent communication skills for cross‑departmental collaboration.
- Project management capabilities, including scheduling and resource allocation.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and environmental compliance.
- Fluency in English; knowledge of Setswana is an advantage.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as Certified Automation Professional (CAP) or Siemens S7 Programming are highly desirable and will be considered an asset during the selection process.
Experience
Candidates must possess a minimum of five years of hands‑on experience in industrial automation within a manufacturing environment. Experience in the beverage or food processing sector is preferred, though expertise in any high‑volume production line will be valued. Demonstrated success in leading automation projects from concept through to full deployment is essential.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from SSP 120,000 to SSP 180,000 annually, commensurate with experience, qualifications, and performance. In addition to the base salary, the role includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and a retirement savings plan.
