Job Overview
The Agricultural Drone Operations Manager will lead the planning, execution, and analysis of drone‑based precision agriculture initiatives for John Deere Botswana. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a comprehensive drone operations strategy aligned with John Deere’s precision agriculture roadmap.
- Plan, schedule, and execute aerial surveys for crop monitoring, soil analysis, and irrigation assessment across diverse farm sizes.
- Manage a fleet of agricultural drones, ensuring maintenance, calibration, and compliance with Botswana Civil Aviation Authority regulations.
- Collaborate with agronomists and data analysts to translate raw imagery into actionable recommendations for customers.
- Train and mentor field technicians and pilots on safe flight operations, data capture techniques, and post‑processing workflows.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as flight efficiency, data accuracy, and customer satisfaction, and report findings to senior leadership.
- Lead pilot projects that integrate drone data with John Deere’s farm management software and variable rate technology.
- Stay abreast of emerging drone technologies, regulatory changes, and best practices in precision agriculture.
Required Skills
- Proven expertise in operating fixed‑wing and rotary‑wing agricultural drones.
- Strong understanding of remote sensing, GIS, and image processing software (e.g., Pix4D, DroneDeploy).
- Ability to interpret agronomic data and provide practical recommendations to farmers.
- Excellent project management skills with a focus on timelines, budgets, and stakeholder communication.
- Knowledge of Botswana’s aviation regulations and experience obtaining necessary flight permits.
- Effective leadership and team development capabilities.
- Strong analytical mindset with proficiency in data visualization tools.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in Setswana is a plus.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering, Agronomy, Environmental Science, Geomatics, or a closely related field is required. Advanced certifications in UAV operations, remote sensing, or precision agriculture are highly desirable.
Experience
Applicants should have 5‑7 years of hands‑on experience in precision agriculture, drone piloting, or related agritech roles. Experience working directly with farmers, agronomists, or agricultural consultants in Botswana or similar environments will be considered an asset.
