Job Overview

The Heritage Site Management Specialist will lead conservation efforts at Kasane’s key heritage sites, including the iconic Chobe River region and surrounding cultural landmarks. This role combines technical expertise in heritage preservation with strategic tourism development to ensure these sites remain accessible and protected for future generations. The position reports directly to the National Heritage Director and collaborates with UNESCO and local stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations and conservation of designated heritage sites
  • Develop and implement site-specific preservation plans
  • Coordinate with local communities and tourism operators to balance conservation and visitor access
  • Conduct site assessments and prepare maintenance schedules
  • Manage heritage tourism programs and visitor education initiatives
  • Ensure compliance with national and international heritage protection standards

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in heritage site management or cultural tourism
  • Strong project management and stakeholder coordination skills
  • Knowledge of ICOMOS and UNESCO heritage guidelines
  • Proficiency in GIS mapping and site documentation software
  • Excellent communication and cross-cultural collaboration abilities
  • Ability to work in remote field conditions

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Archaeology, Cultural Heritage Management, or related field
  • Master’s Degree preferred but not required

Experience

  • 3-5 years in heritage conservation, tourism management, or related roles
  • Experience working with government agencies or NGOs in Botswana

Salary

150,000 – 200,000 SSP per annum, depending on experience.
