Job Overview

The Power Systems Reliability Engineer will play a critical role in ensuring the stability and reliability of Botswana’s power grid. Reporting to the Head of Power Systems, you will lead reliability analyses, develop mitigation strategies, and collaborate with cross‑functional teams to enhance system performance. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive reliability assessments of generation, transmission, and distribution assets.
  • Develop and implement corrective action plans to reduce system failures and improve uptime.
  • Perform root cause analysis of major outages and coordinate with operations teams for rapid restoration.
  • Model and simulate power system behavior under various load and generation scenarios.
  • Support the integration of renewable energy projects, ensuring compliance with grid codes.
  • Prepare detailed reliability reports and present findings to senior management.
  • Collaborate with maintenance, planning, and asset management departments to align reliability initiatives.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and benchmark against industry standards.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and best practices in power system reliability.

Required Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in power system analysis software (e.g., PSS®E, DigSILENT PowerFactory).
  • In‑depth knowledge of grid codes, standards, and reliability metrics.
  • Excellent communication skills for reporting to technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Project management experience with a focus on reliability improvement projects.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a closely related field is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications such as CEM (Certified Energy Manager) or PERC (Power Engineering Reliability Certification) are advantageous.

Experience

Minimum of five years of experience in power system reliability, grid operations, or related engineering roles. Experience with renewable energy integration and large‑scale utility environments is highly preferred.
