Key Responsibilities
- Design comprehensive smart grid architectures that integrate intermittent renewable energy sources with existing baseload power.
- Develop detailed technical specifications for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to mitigate grid volatility.
- Perform complex load flow analysis and stability simulations using industry-standard software.
- Lead the integration of SCADA systems for real-time monitoring and control of distributed energy resources.
- Coordinate with regulatory bodies to ensure all grid designs comply with Botswana’s energy laws and international IEC standards.
- Provide technical leadership to multidisciplinary teams of electrical engineers and project managers.
- Conduct site assessments in Letlhakane and surrounding areas to optimize the placement of substation infrastructure.
- Develop strategies for demand-side management to reduce peak load pressure on the national grid.
Required Skills
- Expertise in Power Systems Analysis and Grid Stability modeling.
- Proficiency in ETAP, PSS/E, or DigSILENT PowerFactory.
- Deep understanding of Inverter-Based Resources (IBR) and their impact on grid inertia.
- Strong knowledge of HVDC and HVAC transmission systems.
- Advanced project management skills with a focus on large-scale infrastructure deployment.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Strategic thinking regarding the scalability of renewable energy assets.
Education
A Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a closely related field from a recognized international university is mandatory. Professional certification as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent is highly preferred.
Experience
Candidates must possess 7 to 10 years of proven experience in grid architecture or power systems design, specifically focusing on the integration of renewable energy. Experience working in emerging markets or Sub-Saharan Africa is a significant advantage. A track record of successfully delivering utility-scale energy projects from conception to commissioning is required.
