Job Overview

The Energy Storage Systems Engineer will lead the design, specification, and implementation of large‑scale battery storage solutions for utility‑scale and commercial renewable projects. Reporting to the Head of Energy Solutions, you will collaborate with cross‑functional teams including project managers, grid engineers, and procurement specialists to deliver reliable, cost‑effective storage systems that enhance grid stability and enable higher penetration of renewable generation. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the end‑to‑end engineering of battery energy storage systems (BESS), including feasibility studies, system sizing, and performance modeling.
• Develop detailed technical specifications, single‑line diagrams, and integration plans for storage projects ranging from 5 MW to 50 MW.
• Coordinate with grid operators and utility partners to ensure compliance with interconnection standards and grid codes.
• Manage vendor selection, technical evaluation, and contract negotiations for battery modules, inverters, and balance‑of‑system components.
• Oversee installation, commissioning, and performance testing, ensuring projects meet safety, reliability, and efficiency targets.
• Provide technical support during operation, including data analysis, fault diagnosis, and optimization of storage dispatch strategies.
• Collaborate with the sustainability team to quantify carbon reduction and financial benefits of storage deployments.
• Prepare comprehensive technical reports, cost‑benefit analyses, and presentation decks for senior leadership and stakeholders.

Required Skills

• Deep knowledge of lithium‑ion, flow, and hybrid battery technologies and their application in grid‑scale storage.
• Proficiency with simulation tools such as HOMER, PSS®E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, or MATLAB/Simulink.
• Strong understanding of power electronics, inverter control, and protection schemes.
• Experience with IEC 61850, IEEE 1547, and local Botswana grid interconnection standards.
• Excellent project management abilities, including scheduling, budgeting, and risk mitigation.
• Effective communication skills for interfacing with regulators, clients, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Ability to work independently in remote field locations and adapt to dynamic project environments.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications (e.g., PMP, CEM) are highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.

Experience

Minimum of five (5) years of hands‑on experience designing, delivering, or managing battery energy storage projects. Prior exposure to Botswana’s energy market, utility partnerships, or African renewable initiatives will be viewed favorably.

Salary

The competitive remuneration package ranges from SSP 120,000 to 180,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additional performance‑based incentives may be offered based on project milestones and overall company performance.
