Job Overview
The Sustainable Mining Community Liaison Officer will serve as the primary point of contact between BHP Billiton Botswana and the local communities in and around Mochudi. The role involves designing, implementing, and monitoring community development programs that align with both corporate sustainability goals and the aspirations of residents. You will collaborate with internal stakeholders, including environmental, health and safety, and operations teams, to ensure that community initiatives are integrated into the overall mining plan. This position plays a pivotal role in fostering transparent communication, mitigating social risks, and enhancing the social license to operate. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute community engagement strategies that support BHP’s sustainability framework and local development priorities.
- Facilitate regular dialogue sessions, town‑hall meetings, and stakeholder workshops to gather feedback and address concerns.
- Coordinate community projects such as education scholarships, health clinics, water infrastructure, and livelihood training programs.
- Monitor and report on the social impact of mining activities, preparing quarterly and annual reports for senior management and regulators.
- Collaborate with environmental and health & safety teams to ensure that community initiatives align with environmental compliance and risk management.
- Maintain a comprehensive database of community contacts, grievances, and project outcomes.
- Represent BHP at local government meetings, NGOs, and industry forums to advocate for responsible mining practices.
- Identify opportunities for local procurement and employment, fostering economic empowerment within the Mochudi region.
Required Skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with fluency in English and Setswana.
- Strong project management abilities, including budgeting, scheduling, and performance tracking.
- Proven experience in community development, stakeholder engagement, or corporate social responsibility within the mining sector.
- Analytical mindset to assess social impact data and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
- Ability to navigate cultural sensitivities and build trust across diverse community groups.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and data visualization tools.
- Flexibility to travel to remote sites and work occasional evenings for community events.
Education
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Community Development, Sociology, or a related field is required. Advanced certifications in Project Management (PMP) or Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are considered an asset.
Experience
Applicants must have at least five years of relevant experience, preferably within the mining industry or a large‑scale natural resources operation. Demonstrated success in designing and delivering community programs that generate measurable social benefits is essential.
